We beseech from you, honorable father,

Lord Saint Gregory, Partev chief,

Be a rampart and helper for us,

In the time of war against temptation.

Good Begettor, take pity on us,

Gather your scattered children,

Deliver us from the Deceiver,

And direct us to the good.

And be helper to this servant of God (name).1

Hmayil Part 9

1 St. Gregory the Illuminator is the fourth person listed by name in Armenian prayers of intercession, following, in sequence, the Virgin Mary, St. John the Baptist (or Forerunner), and St. Stephen the Protomartyr (to whom prayers of intercession are found in Parts 6–8 of this hmayil). It is noteworthy that this supplication is not asking St. Gregory to intercede with God on our behalf, as would be expected. Rather, it asks certain things of St. Gregory that are normally asked of God: be a rampart and helper, take pity, gather, deliver, direct, and again be a helper. Furthermore, and significantly, the fifth line of the supplication is addressed to “Good Begettor” (Ծնօղ բարի), which is typically understood to be God the Father. Here, however, it possibly refers to St. Gregory, who, as the Illuminator of Armenia, is the Begettor of that Christian nation, and as the founder of the Armenian Church, is the Begettor of all those reborn into it by baptism—whose sons have been scattered throughout the world.
