Abbreviations

The use of abbreviations is very common in manuscripts and printed Krapar texts; in fact, some words are almost never spelled out in full. Words are typically abbreviated using a badiv (պատիւ) mark 
over one or more letters in the word. For example, Աստուած is abbreviated as 
, and Յիսուս Քրիստոս is abbreviated as 
. Prefixes and suffixes are readily added to abbreviated forms, e.g., սուրբ is abbreviated as 
, and զսուրբսն is abbreviated as 
. Compound words use the abbreviation of one of the stem words, e.g., Աստուածածին is abbreviated as 
. Some abbreviations became somewhat standardized over time (see below), while many others occur wherever a scribe or printer simply wanted to save space in a line of text.
Shown here is the beginning of a homily by the vardapet Grigor Tserents‘ Khlat‘ets‘i (Գրիգոր Ծերենց Խլաթեցի) (Gregory of Khlat, 1349–1425), in a manuscript of the Armenian Synaxarion or Yaysmawurk‘ (Յայսմաւուրք) (plural of “On This Day”). The five lines of text shown have six abbrieviated words: Վասն and բարկութեան in the first line, անիրաւութեան in the second, Աստուած and որպէս in the third, and թագաւոր in the fifth. In the manuscript, the word “Satan” is abbreviated as 
սատանայ, which is atypical in that the badiv mark is below the letters, reflecting the subterranean location of his realm.
Shown here is the beginning of the Armenian version of Daniel of Salah, Commentary on Psalm 23 (Յաղագս քսաներորդ երրորդ Սաղմոսին), with abbreviations: Զաւրութիւնք and սուրբք in the first line, յաստուածային in the second, and ճանութիւնն in the third. In addition, the second line has the word հովուին abbreviated as հովին, with the letters ու above the word.
Shown here are two verses of an ode in a printed page of a tagharan (տաղարան) (ode book) published in Constantinople (Կ.պօլիս) in 1740, with abbreviations: անարատ in the first line, երրորդութեան in the second, and Զարդարեալ and սրբութեամբ in the third. In addition, the last word in the second line, աւե'', is part of the first word of a prior repetitive refrain of the ode. Likewise, last word in the fourth line, ուրախ'', is an the first word of the next repetitive refrain.
